Going green often refers to the pursuit of knowledge and practices that lead to a more environmentally and ecologically responsible lifestyle. It is about making decisions based on sustaining and supporting natural resources for now and for future generations. It truly is about caring for our planet and all who dwell on Mother Earth. It is also about the principle of oneness and unity.
With globalization, our world has become smaller. With this thought, it is good to remember that every single thing we do has an impact on others and on this planet. This is important in not only how we treat our planet but how we treat each other. Dr. Wangari Maathai, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 said, “Peace on earth depends on our ability to secure our living environment. Equating the two, peace and the environment, allows us to understand the big picture and the manner in which we are all connected.” Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement, has helped the world connect the dots between women’s rights, sustainable development, democracy, human rights and world peace.
As a spiritual leader, I also see Go Green in light of our own spiritual evolution. Green is the color of the heart chakra. The heart chakra is the energy center for love, compassion, forgiveness and self-esteem. These components are the basis for healing, whether it is healing our planet, our past or ourselves. Just as green is the color of nature. Green symbolizes growth, renewal, and rebirth. Green is an emotionally positive color. It is also the color of prosperity and abundance. Who would not want a little more green in their life?
Green also represents hope. When we start seeing green after a long winter, we begin to see hope for a beautiful spring and summer. We all need hope, hope for our planet, our country and our future.
Going green is not just the pursuit of knowledge and the practice of leading a more responsible lifestyle environmentally, it is also about being responsible for the energy of the heart. Our heart has the capacity to love, to forgive and to express compassion and hope.
As we each take more responsibility for our earth, may we also take more responsibility for the energy we send out into this universe.
